After the Ice

About twelve thousand years ago, the ice that covered the north began to melt, and it did not come back in the winter. This page counts years from then. Everything people have made since then fits on the line at the top: farms, cities, writing, ships, all of it.

The line at the top is the whole twelve thousand years. The pale blue window on that line is the part you are looking at now. Drag the window to move through time. Drag either end of the window to make it wider or narrower.

The line at the bottom shows what happened inside the window. Tap a dot on the bottom line, and the map moves to the place where that thing happened. Tap a place on the map, and its dot lights up on the bottom line. The words between the line and the map say what happened there.

The map moves too. Drag it to travel. Pinch it, or scroll, to come closer.

The road in the middle is the same years again, drawn so that the years nearest to you get the most room.

What I’ve seen shows only the things you have already tapped.
